Long Ramp
You need a portable or mobile loading and unloading station if you intend to load and unload vans or shipping containers. Wheels are a must. If you are placing the ramp on your dock to get your forklift, pallet servers, or hand trucks from the dock down to ground level, the key question is, "How often will you have to move it? If the answer is once or twice per month, then you can get by with the dock-to-ground variety which does not include the wheels and will save you about $1,000. Make sure you have a way to move it. These ramps weigh from 4,000-6,000 lbs. So you need a forklift along with the proper lifting accessories to pick up and/or place the ramp properly.
Steel will most likely be purchased by customers. If you are concerned about the ramp's appearance or long-term condition (as in 10 or more years), you may want to go with aluminum. In exchange for a more expensive ramp, there won't be any rust that develops with a steelyard ramp over time. These ramps are made to be outside so even with some rust over a few years, you should not have to worry about the structural integrity of your ramp. Additionally, aluminum ramps weigh less than Long Steel Ramps and the size of your forklift may determine whether you can handle a steelyard ramp versus an aluminum yard ramp.
If you are loading vans or shipping containers you need a) wheels to move it around, b) you need the level off so that your forklift can get the forks down in order to access the cargo at the rear of the van. You will need to move your ramp to access the back of the trailer if you use a straight ramp. This makes loading and unloading a two-step process. The shorter length of a straight ramp will save you money but it will cost you some time in this case. Level off areas on a ramp is typically 6 feet to 8 feet in length.
Yard Ramps typically come in two lengths, although you can order a custom design to fit your application in terms of length, width and capacity. Straight Ramps without the level off are 30 feet long. The ramps with the level off are 36 feet long - which includes 30 feet of straight ramps and 6 feet of level offs. Some customers are space-challenged and would like a shorter ramp. The key issue here is grade. You may run into grade issues with your forklift if you try to get a shorter ramp. If the grade is too steep you may engage the forklift automatic shut-off controls. So do the math, consult with your forklift manufacturer and determine if your desired length will permit you to operate with a safe grade and within the limits of your forklift's operational capabilities.
You've heard the old saying, "A rose by any other name is still a rose." Well, when shopping for a ramp, you may encounter a number of names all referring to essentially the same piece of equipment: Dock Ramp, Steel Yard Ramp, Forklift Ramp, Portable, or Mobile Yard Ramps. It's all the same thing. Your job is to determine what type and what other accessories you may need like railings, forklift loop or tow bar (to move it), rubber or pneumatic tires, hydraulic pump, etc.
